Application Process
1. Attend our Open Rehearsal(s)
When we are accepting new members, we open up our rehearsals to prospective members for a few weeks, usually every September. These are low key, fun events, with a relaxed atmosphere. If you're nervous about joining such a large group then don't be! You're welcome to watch, or join in the singing or dancing. Chorus members will be on hand to help you through every stage of the process. Don't be shy and just give it a try!
See if you like the atmosphere, the music, the choreography, the community. If not, you can leave at any time. Don't worry if you don't know the music straight away, just have fun!
After the rehearsal is done, you are welcome to join us at the bar to relax and chat with the rest of the group.
2. Pay Membership Fee
In order to cover our expenses, we ask every member to pay a membership fee every six months. These fees cover renting our rehearsal space and performance hall, and paying for the services of our music director, dance director, and accompanist.
The current cost is €150 every six months. However, members under 27 years old get a 50% discount!
We understand that not everyone is able to afford these fees, and we don't want that to prevent you from joining. If the cost is a problem for you, send us an email and we will find a solution.
3. Short Audition
In order to ensure that our group offers high quality music and dance, we ask you to go through a short audition. We do not expect a perfect, polished performance! This is an amateur group, and amateur ability and talent is fine. We will primarily use this audition to assess your voice part or dance style, and use that information to place you accordingly in the group.
In the unlikely event that you do not pass this audition, we will fully refund your membership fee.
Commitments
Attend Rehearsals and Performances
By joining the AMSGMC, you are committing to attend our rehearsals and performances, as much as you are able to do so. We typically rehearse once a week, on Wednesday evenings from 19:30 until 22:00. We don't expect you to attend every single rehearsal: everyone has occasional conflicts, such as illness or travel. However, we expect you to attend at least 75% of our rehearsals if you want to perform with the group.
Our performances are usually on Saturdays and/or Sundays. We generally only have three shows per year, so if you can attend, please do so!
Practice at Home
Most people in the group need to spend a bit of time each week practicing, in addition to the weekly rehearsals. Most people only need to spend about one hour per week practicing at home; some people need more, some need less. We care about how well you know the music/dance, not how long you spend practicing.
We provide sheet music and audio files for singers, and choreography videos for dancers. We encourage you to use these resources when practicing at home! You can practice together with others in the chorus; it's a nice way to get to know more people!
