Recruitment

Vacancy: Dance Coach & Choreographer

About AMSGMC

Bringing together around 100 singers and dancers, the Amsterdam Gay Men’s Chorus is the largest gay men’s chorus in the Netherlands.

Founded in 2015, AMSGMC creates a welcoming and inclusive environment for queer men and non-binary people, with a commitment to ongoing reflection and growth in how we approach inclusivity. Our chorus is highly international, with members from more than 30 countries, and rehearsals conducted in English.

We create themed productions that combine music, movement and storytelling. Recent performances have explored personal journeys and chosen family, queer identity through cultural icons, and imaginative, theatrical narratives ranging from intimate and emotional to bold and playful.

Our repertoire spans pop, musical theatre, electronic music, and classical influences, often reimagined through creative arrangements and mashups. We perform throughout the year at a variety of venues in Amsterdam, including major stages such as the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ and the Concertgebouw.

We believe that music and dance have the power to inspire, uplift, and connect people. As an active part of Amsterdam’s LGBTQ+ community, we use our performances to celebrate diversity, challenge stereotypes, and share the many stories within our community.

The Role

We are looking for a passionate Dance Coach & Choreographer to join our artistic team. In this combined role, you will create choreography and lead weekly rehearsals for a diverse group of around 15 dancers with varying levels of experience, from complete beginners to trained performers. Your work will be central in developing movement that is both accessible and engaging, while also artistically ambitious and expressive, helping shape the visual and performative identity of our productions.

In addition, you will contribute to the development of movement for the wider chorus. This involves creating simple, effective staging and movement for a large group of singers, ensuring that choreography enhances the visual impact of the performance while remaining compatible with singing.

You will collaborate with the artistic team to ensure choreography supports storytelling, character, and the overall emotional and theatrical impact of each production. While much of your work focuses on the dance group, AMSGMC performs as a unified ensemble, bringing together singers and dancers to create a shared experience for the audience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and develop choreography for approximately 6–8 pieces per production cycle (August–June), contributing to a cohesive themed show

  • Design choreography that combines visual impact and technical interest with accessibility for a mixed-ability group

  • Lead and structure weekly Wednesday evening rehearsals, focusing on teaching, integrating, and refining choreography

  • Develop and integrate simple, effective movement for the wider chorus (including singers) that supports singing and overall staging

  • Collaborate closely with the artistic team and stage director to align choreography with overall creative vision, ensuring movement supports musical, narrative, and emotional storytelling

  • Support members’ individual growth, confidence, and stage presence across a wide range of experience levels

  • Maintain, adapt, and restage existing choreography where needed

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience in choreography and coaching, ideally with amateur or mixed-experience groups

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

  • Ability to create a positive, inclusive, and motivating rehearsal environment for dancers with varied levels of experience

  • A creative and theatrical mindset, with an interest in storytelling through movement

  • Confidence in teaching and communicating in English, as this is the working language of our international chorus

  • Flexibility and a proactive approach to working in a collaborative setting

  • Availability for regular Wednesday evening rehearsals (19.30-22.00, in Amsterdam West) and key performance periods

  • Affinity with LGBTQ+ communities and an international working environment

What We Offer

  • A collaborative, open, and creative environment

  • The opportunity to shape the visual and artistic direction of a large, vibrant chorus, playing a key role in Amsterdam's LGBTQ+ community

  • A diverse and enthusiastic group of performers

  • The chance to contribute to ambitious, themed productions performed on major stages in Amsterdam

  • A freelance, paid role, with compensation in line with experience and the scope of the role, to be discussed during the process

  • An estimated annual time commitment in the range of ~200 hours, depending on the production cycle and planning.

Performances & Activities

We perform throughout the year, with our largest productions taking place in early summer (June/July) and winter (January/February). We also regularly participate in events such as Amsterdam Pride and collaborate with organisations that share our values.

Process

  • Informal introductory conversations (May/June)

  • Trial rehearsal(s) with the group

  • Final selection in collaboration with the artistic team
